What is a Solar PV system?

Solar PV panels turn daylight into clean, renewable electricity for your farm. They can go on a roof or be mounted on the ground, and either way they can help power your daily operations and make you less reliant on the grid. To save even more, you can add battery storage and keep the extra energy for later.

Benefits of Solar for Agriculture

Solar PV gives you more control over your farm’s operating costs. Generating your own electricity on site can help improve profitability and support a more sustainable way of farming.

How it works

5 Reasons To Switch

Grant Support

Grants can help cover the cost of solar and battery storage.

Lower Energy Costs

Take control of your energy use and rely less on the grid.

Energy Independence

Take control of your energy use and rely less on the grid.

Long-Term Value

Protect yourself from rising energy prices with a system built to save you money for decades.

Export & Earn

Where eligible, earn money by sending surplus electricity back to the grid.

Planning Permission for Solar Panels

In many cases, you can install solar panels on farm and commercial buildings without planning permission, depending on current regulations and exemptions. Our team can check the requirements for your property and tell you whether you’ll need permission before your project starts.

We can help

We’ll guide you through the planning requirements and assess any site-specific restrictions. Where planning permission is needed, we’ll support you with the application. Throughout, you’ll have expert advice from our experienced solar installation team.

Grants & Supports

Agriculture is central to the Irish economy, and more farmers are turning to solar to cut costs and farm more sustainably. Grants, incentives, and support schemes can make solar easier to afford. Our team can help you find the right options and guide you through the process from start to finish.

1. Solar Capital Investment Scheme (SCIS)

The Solar Capital Investment Scheme (SCIS), part of the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS III), helps eligible farmers significantly reduce the cost of installing solar PV systems. Grant funding of up to 60% is available towards qualifying solar installations, including battery storage, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable for Irish farms.
The scheme includes a dedicated investment ceiling of €90,000 for solar projects, allowing farmers to invest in clean energy while retaining access to funding for other eligible TAMS measures. As SCIS is designed to support on-farm energy use, systems funded under the scheme are intended to offset farm electricity consumption rather than generate revenue through electricity exports.

By investing in solar through SCIS, farmers can:

  • Reduce energy costs
  • Improve energy independence
  • Lower farm-level carbon emissions
  • Increase the long-term sustainability of their operations

With support available until 2028, SCIS provides an excellent opportunity for farmers to future-proof their business while reducing reliance on rising energy prices.

2. Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA)

The Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) is a valuable tax incentive that allows eligible businesses, including farmers, to claim the full cost of qualifying energy-efficient equipment against taxable profits in the year of purchase.
By accelerating tax relief, the scheme helps improve cash flow and reduce the overall cost of investing in renewable energy technologies such as solar PV. Combined with the long-term savings generated by on-site electricity production, ACA can help farmers achieve a faster return on their investment while improving the energy efficiency of their operations.

Benefits

  • Claim tax relief on qualifying equipment in the year of purchase
  • Reduce taxable profits and improve cash flow
  • Lower the overall cost of investing in solar energy
  • Support a more energy-efficient and sustainable farming business

This incentive helps farmers realise both immediate financial benefits and long-term savings from their renewable energy investment.

3. The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG

The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) allows homeowners, businesses and farmers to earn money by exporting surplus solar electricity back to the grid. If your solar PV system generates more electricity than you use, your energy supplier may provide a payment for the excess energy exported.
The rate paid under the CEG varies by electricity supplier, making it an additional benefit that can help improve the return on your solar investment.

  • Earn from excess electricity generation
  • Improve the return on your solar investment
  • Reduce dependence on grid electricity
  • Turn unused energy into additional income

System Size &
Grant Support

Solar PV systems are sized in kWp, a measure of their maximum generating capacity. Available grant support will depend on the size of the system and your project’s eligibility. Every farm is different, so we’ll assess your energy requirements and provide a tailored solution based on your property, usage and available funding.

System Size Grant Amount (kWp) Energy Produced Total Grant
6 kWp 4 kWp up to 6kWp 5,400 kWh Up to €1,800
20 kWp €300/kWp 18,000 kWh Up to €6,600
200 kWp €200/kWp 180,000 kWh Up to €42,600
200 kWp+ Up to €950/kWp 180,000 kWh+ Up to €162,600

The system’s kWp, or Kilowatt Peak (in the first line) refers to its peak power, or the rate at which it can generate energy in optimal conditions (like a sunny day). In terms of system size, grant aid for farmers has increased considerably under the new TAMS scheme: from 11kW to 62kW.

Note: This is just an example – costs and grants may vary depending on the type and quality of the panels, the system size that’s best for your farm building, plus the location of your farm and how much energy it consumes. Your installation company can give you a clearer estimate during the assessment.
